Talking to Yourself: Are You Saying the Right Words?

Many the time I have been “caught” by others talking to myself! I didn’t see the problem in it. It is easier for me to hear it verbalized and then refine what I hear.

Is it in alignment with what I envisioned? I heard somewhere that the great minds in our history talked to themselves. I was in good company! Of course, some people heard me thought I was looney. I might have been. It did help me, though, to accomplish a great deal toward what I wanted.

Your subconscious mind takes the orders you give it based upon what your conscious mind believes and accepts as true.

What Do You Do?

Each person is a caretaker for their mind, their heart, their body.

What you say to it may be good or may be bad; the real truth or your truth. What is your “bedside manner”? How do you talk to yourself? What do you say? Do you take what others say about you and plant it in you?

John C. Maxwell, today’s number one transformational leadership statesman, attended a seminar in 1974 in Dayton, Ohio. John heard W. Clement Stone speak on having a sense of urgency. Stone’s session was titled “Do It Now”. He instructed the attendees, “Before you get out of bed every morning, say ‘do it now’ fifty times. At the end of the day before you go to sleep, the last thing you should do is say ‘do it now’ fifty times.” John followed the instructions and gained a sense of urgency. It became part of him and his work through this day. What are you telling yourself each day? Today is important, do it now!

I want you to view the future as your playground-Something that can be hacked-Something you can influence with your thinking and your actions.”
~ Michael Myatt

Influencing the Mind

I read with interest in Michael Myatt’s book, Hacking Leadership. What I found was a greater appreciation for what laid before me, what I had actually done by living intentionally. Each person must wrestle with their subconscious to determine whether they will do the bidding on what was programmed into them by their environment or bring a blueprint design to their future!

A great barrier to living intentionally each day to reach one’s dream is to postpone taking action today. What happens? A majority of people avoid taking action even though they had the intention. People don’t commit to taking action because they don’t start talking to themselves.  They need to order their minds on what — THEY — WILL — DO! Make it concrete. Do it today!

Sage advisors have noted different methods to accomplish making it visible. They include:

  • Program a task clock to go off every hour to remind to affirm the order
  • Identify an object, like running water, that appears in your day. When it is seen, affirm the order to the mind.
  • Place a reminder script in a frequented location, for instance, on the bathroom mirror or the refrigerator. Each time one sees it, read it aloud.
  • Talking about it with others
  • Of course, saying “do it now” now 50 times first thing when awake and 50 times last thing before sleep

This takes concerted effort. Otherwise, we are living the daily process and perhaps going nowhere soon.

People tend to get into ruts in life. They get in an easy groove, and they don’t try to break out of it–even when it’s taking them in the wrong direction. … the only difference between a rut and a grave is the length.
~ John C. Maxwell

What is your rut length? Are you doing something different with a plan to reach what you dream or a goal, meaning you are making progress?

I Don’t Know What Fuels Me?

This question has come up in a number of client discussions. My question to them is “What do you really want?” Some people have come back with “I don’t know what I want.” Napoleon Hill noted: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” What are the keys? They include taking a look at these:

  • Your passion
  • Your purpose
  • What exhilarates your want to help others?
  • What is burning within you to be?
  • Envision a better you? What does a better you look like?
  • What is one component of your behavior that you would like to change?

It may be hard to identify still one’s purpose and passion “out of the gate”. The following questions might help to bring one closer. These take time to answer and require continual growth and periodic assessment – afterall, if you are doing it right, you are not who you were yesterday:

  • Who really are you? What are you already doing for others?
  • What is your character?
  • What would you consider and what do others say are your skills?
  • What would you describe about your relationships with others? Who are the five closest people nearest you? Do they grow you, keep you stagnant, or regress you? Are you the smartest one of the group?
  • What would describe your spiritual nature to be?

Passion may be defined as having a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. It gives your heart a leap and wanting to do it again. Purpose is meant to be explored by each person and uniquely revealed over time.

All humans, no matter who they are, are intended to daily evolve. They are not meant to live static lives. Actually, no one lives a static life. They live stagnant lives through their choice to remain comfortable. Growth does not just walk by and “poof, you are something better”. No, growth is meant to be challenging, to encourage us on, to enact in our daily agenda. It is also not meant to go it alone. We need others. We first though need to get our mind focused on what we will achieve.

Will you climb to your dreams or will the challenge be too big?

I believe the following is a great summary of people’s life journey. Which way are you headed?

Our journey from here to there is lonely. The reason is that people are willing to be wrong because of their desire to change and grow. Growth is a result of bad habits dropped, wrong priorities changed, new ways of thinking embraced. The people who don’t grow are unwilling to leave what they have known and practiced. They are not willing to be wrong so they can discover what is right. Therefore, they cling to right and their lives turn out wrong. Surrender to being right is a prerequisite to finding right.
